Behind the Beans

At Costa Coffee, our sustainability programme Behind the Beans forms a huge part of the way we do business.

We want to maximise coffee love whilst minimising waste. That’s why we go full circle, considering everything from the seed that grows the plant, through to the cup in your hand to inspire the world to love great coffee with as little impact on the planet as possible. From everyday efficiencies to bold new innovations, at Costa Coffee we’re always looking for ways to reduce, reuse and recycle the resources we use, as well as working to reduce our energy use.

Costa Coffee is committed to looking after coffee-growers and investing in the future of sustainable coffee. We established the Costa Foundation, a registered charity, in 2006 with the aim of eradicating poverty in coffee-growing communities by providing children with access to quality education. We also source 100% of our coffee and hot chocolate from Rainforest Alliance certified farms.

In the UK, our nationwide Community Programme enables our store teams to make a practical, hands-on contribution to their local communities, primarily through volunteer time and donated space in store. Our key areas of focus are on bringing people together in our stores through initiatives like the Chatty Café Scheme, donating our food surplus to people in need, and participating in local litter picks to keep our communities tidy.
